Walls clocks is a generic name for any clock, as the word says, that mounts on a wall. Here we showcase the best of Hermle, Howard Miller and Holtzhausen Wall clocks. Most of them will be traditional mechanically wound 8-day clocks with a strike or melody.
All Wall clocks have the Regulator as horological ancestor. A Regulator is a standard clock used for the regulation of other timekeepers. It is usually a clock with a seconds pendulum compensated for temperature changes, dead beat or gravity escapement, weight driven, with everything reduced to the greatest simplicity. Although it may have fine finishes on the acting parts, its prime purpose is accuracy.
Christiaan Huygens made the first pendulum clock in 1656. He started developing a pendulum clock as he was interested in Galileo's discovery of isochronism, i.e. the period of swing of the pendulum to both sides are equal. Galileo started such a clock in 1637 but neither him nor his son finished it before their deaths. Christiaan Huygens patented his pendulum clock in 1657. This clock initiated the development of the Regulator. Between 1760-1780 two Englishman Benjamin Vulliamy and James Harrison invented some of the earliest Regulators. These Regulators or Wall clocks ran so accurately that they served as timekeepers at railway stations and post offices and yet they we not as well received in England as they were in Vienna.
