Our Grandfather clocks for sale is a showcase of Hermle, Holtzhausen and Howard Miller clocks.
Howard Miller refers to their Grandfather clocks as Floor clocks. Terms more familiar to the English market are Longcase clocks or even Tallcase clocks. The American terms of Granddaughter, Grandmother and Grandfather clocks are in general use nowadays and usually signfies the length of a clock. A Granddaughter will be up to 5ft. a Grandmother between 5 and 6ft. and a Grandfather 6ft and taller. The term Grandfather clock relates to the 1876 song written by Henry C. Work: My Grandfather's clock. William Clement of London (1657-1709) is credited with the invention of this style of clock in 1670 with the invention of the Anchor escapement by Hooke. This escapment was an improvement on the Verge escapement. Amongst others it reduced the width of the swing to 6 degrees from 100 degrees which resulted in longer pendulums that fitted into tall and slim clock cases.
Most of the Grandfather clocks we showcase are fitted with traditional 8-day wind up movements. Howard Miller carries the Kieninger range, Hermle their own Hermle movements and Holtzhausen is fitted with either of the two. As an exception Howard Miller does equip a few clocks with battery operated movements. This will be stated clearly and will be a design imperative.
